This is probably the most essential factor when we assess a betting site. If punters are thinking about joining a new betting site, or an established one for that matter, they need to feel assured that it is completely safe.

Checking out how the site is licensed and regulated is the first port of call here. We ensure that every single betting site listed on BettingLounge.ie is fully licensed by the Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland (GRAI), listing the specific licence number for each bookie and links to the licence itself.

We also check the operator's history and reputation in the industry to see if they have received any fines or an unusual number of negative reviews, while also studying whether they have adequate player protection tools.

Since the GRAI licence has only been secured by established bookmakers so far, there aren't really any questionable licensed sites. In the UK, on the other hand, there are pretty extensive issues with licensed sites failing to live up to acceptable standards (especially white-label ones).

We currently recommend reading our expert reviews and accurate player comments before joining any betting site, as even the established bookies sometimes fall short.

As per GRAI regulations and the Gambling Regulation Act 2024, strict Know Your Customer (KYC) processes are in place. When a punter decides to sign up on a site, 'the licensee must verify the age and identity of a participant who wants to open an online gambling account'.

This means that the identity of the punter must be verified before any of the following things can be done:

Welcome offers aren't the only promotions offered, though, as betting sites need to offer consistent value for punters to keep coming back. That's where existing customer promotions come in, such as weekly rewards, early payouts, best odds guaranteed and much more.

All punters will know that these can make a massive difference, especially early payouts and best odds guaranteed, so any betting site offering both certainly catches our attention. Of course, the rest has to be good as well.

One thing that many punters forget when it comes to assessing the value is the average betting margins. By calculating this on markets, you can essentially see the 'fee' that the bookie charges for letting you place the bet. The lower, the better.

The best example is often the coin toss scenario, which is a thing in certain sports. While the probability is 50-50, which should put the odds at evens (2.0) for each outcome, these odds are typically at around 1.90 or so. That's the bookie's margin plain as day.

We sometimes see bookies with an average of 8-10%, which is much higher than the best bookies that tend to come in at around 4-6%. In other words, checking this can actually make a big difference, and we do the work for you in our reviews.

The user experience is broad, but we break it into three distinct sections for our testing process: 1) sports, markets & odds 2) live betting & streaming and 3) usability & design.

Sports, Markets & Odds

Most of the established Irish betting sites have a similar range of sports and betting markets. Some of them attempt to stand out by clearly focusing on something new or different, such as esports and special markets of various kinds (politics, entertainment, and so on).

When looking at the less popular sports, however, you can actually find that some betting sites offer them and some don't. Not that it's a less popular sport at all, which makes it all the more strange, but some don't even offer horse racing. Always double-check before, as such.

Live betting is an essential part of betting, it goes without saying, and live streaming certainly enhances the experience. As such, if we see that a bookie offers streaming for several sports and competitions, this is something we factor into our review. It's not enough to just offer streaming for the perfect live betting experience, though, with other important features to consider.

Most importantly, looking at which markets are still available once the event starts is a great way of measuring the live betting quality. Due to the nature of certain markets, the number will never be the same as before the event starts, but we sometimes find too much is removed.

Furthermore, regardless of whether streaming is available or not, punters should be able to access decent graphics and live stats during the event. These features can actually make a big difference, sometimes even more useful than streaming.

The best live betting sites out there don't compromise on any of these three key elements, i.e. streaming, market depth, and live features. Another thing worth mentioning is that cash-out policies can sometimes vary, which may catch you off guard.

Usability & Design

Finally, while it's great to have a great selection of odds and live streaming, they don't matter too much if the site or app isn't easy to use. We actually put a lot of effort into testing the usability when making our reviews, testing the menus, specific event layouts, and standard features.

Being able to find what you are looking for quickly, either through a search bar or categories, is one good example of how good design can help the punters a lot. You don't want to be spending ages just trying to find the event or sport you are looking for.

Furthermore, loading times are crucial. It almost sounds silly to mention this in 2026, but the truth is that some betting sites are still struggling on this front. It often ties in with the navigation as well, such as slow menus, buttons with no destination, and so on.

Seeing as most punters use betting apps these days, that is always where we start during our testing. In fact, everything is done through the mobile app if there is one, and if not, we use the mobile browser. There tends to be more issues with these than with the desktop version, after all.

Customer support is essential to many people who want to feel assured that if they have a problem with their account, they will be able to resolve it quickly. That's a very reasonable expectation, but some betting sites still fall short.

Today, customer support from Irish betting sites is usually spread out over different platforms and methods. Many of them actually offer support through social media, such as X or WhatsApp, which we suppose is a way to cater to a younger generation (and improve response time).

At the same time, the most important methods remain email, telephone and live chat. More and more betting sites are prioritising live chat above the other ones, usually offering 24/7 support through AI bots and agents (simple questions for the former, hard questions for the latter).

In general, we would never recommend settling for a betting site with poor customer support, because that tends to be an indication of the overall quality too. 24/7 service should be offered, or near enough anyway, and several contact methods should exist (especially live chat).

Beyond just offering a lot of methods, however, the biggest litmus tests are response time and the quality of the service. These are ultimately the factors that decide the rating for the customer support, as it should be.

In addition to our own input, we rely on real player feedback to create what we call the BL Score. This is a score that combines our editorial verdict, user ratings left on our reviews, Trustpilot ratings, App Store Ratings, and Google Play ratings, making it truly all-encompassing.

The editorial verdict does the heavy lifting for the overall rating, but the other parts certainly play a part too: 33.33-16.67-16.67-16.67-16.67 (in %) is the weighting for the score. We feel this makes for a very realistic outcome, especially since some Trustpilot ratings are lower than what they should be.

As an example, Bet365 only has 1.3/5 on Trustpilot but most would agree (including the app ratings) that it's one of the best sites around, so there needs to be a balance. Not to suggest that negative feedback should be ignored, but we think you get our point.

The above ensures that we cannot influence a betting site's rating purely on our own, even if we wanted to (not that we would, though). It also helps eliminate some of the subconscious bias and subjective preferences that reviewers can never escape.
